Hello again from “Bananaland,”
My adventure in Ecuador continues and in the process, I am getting a real education in cross-cultural ministry. At times it is difficult to not only speak or understand the language but also to comprehend the reasons for customs and traditions. Let me give you a few quick examples:
- In Latin America, futbol (we call it soccer) is king, people go crazy, and the World Cup is the ultimate coronation.
- Here in Ecuador, police and security guards are everywhere, but they really don’t enforce the law very often.
- Did you know that here in Machala it is perfectly acceptable to have thunderous parties well into the next morning?
- Were you aware that it is normal here to keep your young children out at all hours as well?
- What about going to church and then just a little later getting wasted?
- And to top it off, did you know about displaying and then burning effigies of your favorite heroes, villains, or even pets, so that you can have good luck in the New Year?
Think I’m kidding? Take a look at some recent photos:
Even the people in my church follow these customs, although toned down somewhat. You may be thinking that I am just getting homesick. That could be partially true at times. But all of these things were quite apparent during the holiday season when people everywhere were outwardly celebrating Christmas and the New Year, but inwardly those who don’t know Christ were driven by their natural desires and superstitions. I do love the people here and the sense of family and community that is on display at all times! At the same time, crime, poverty, and broken families are prevalent everywhere.
Please continue to pray for me, that I will be strengthened and led by the Spirit each day. This week we are having a large medical brigade here in Machala, with a medical team of nearly 40 North Americans. I will give a report soon on how it turns out.
Love and blessings to you,
David Batcheller
